CHRIS SKIDMORE MP AIMS TO CONTINUE
PREVIOUS MP’S WORK ON DISABLED RIGHTS
24th May 2010
The new MP for Kingswood, Chris Skidmore, has become a member of The All Party Parliamentary Group on Disability (APPDG) , formerly co-chaired by his predecessor, the former MP Roger Berry.
The APPDG is one of the largest and most active of the hundreds of All-Party Groups that exist at Westminster and is chaired by Baroness Jane Campbell of Surbiton.
On joining the group, Chris said, “I went into politics in order to help the most vulnerable in society and I’m determined get on with that now I’m an MP. Roger Berry did a great job raising the profile and championing the rights of disabled people, and I want to continue where he left off. I’m looking forward to working as hard as I possibly can to make a positive contribution to parliament in this important issue, and fighting for disabled rights.”
The APPDG strives to make future-proofing equality a major feature of policy-making so that disabled people can participate widely in all aspects of social, public and family life.
The Group meets regularly when Parliament is sitting. At each meeting members receive a presentation on current disability issues. This may be from a disability organisation, a Government Minister or an academic. Observers are also welcome to attend the meetings.
Recent APPDG meetings have covered the implementation of the UN Disability Convention, an accessible democracy, and disabled people’s priorities for the new Parliament.
