Chris Skidmore joins protest march over EU Referendum

5 March 2008

CHRIS SKIDMORE joined tens of thousands of campaigners for a mass rally outside Parliament to campaign for a referendum over the controversial EU Treaty.

Chris, the Conservative prospective MP for Kingswood travelled to Westminster on Wednesday to take part in the mass protest, organised by

the cross-party campaign group I Want A Referendum.

The lobby offered an opportunity for people to go to Westminster and tell their MP in person why they think there should be a national referendum on the revised EU Constitution.

Speaking from the march, Chris said: "I am campaigning for a referendum on the EU Treaty as it is clear that the treaty is the same as the old constitution in all but name.

"This Government promised us a referendum at the last election and its MPs were elected on this promise. It's time that there was a change in politics and the government and their local MPs kept their word.

"That's why I am standing up for the voters of Kingswood who want the choice they are being denied."

In the 2005 election the Government promised to hold a referendum on the proposed EU Constitution. Later that year, French and Dutch voters overwhelmingly rejected the Constitution in their own referendums.

However, EU leaders are now trying to reintroduce the rejected Constitution in the form of a new treaty. Although they have changed the name, the contents are almost exactly the same.

Only 10 out of 250 proposals in the "new" treaty are different from the proposals in the original EU Constitution. In other words, 96% of the text is the same as the rejected Constitution On 5th March MPs will be voting whether there should be a referendum.
